Boxbird Gallery is a family business, founded and run by husband & wife team Alice & Graham Carter. First opened in 2008 from a gallery space in Hove, Boxbird has hosted some of Brighton & Hove’s most exciting exhibitions, won awards and helped launch the career of some amazing illustrators.
Boxbird specializes in contemporary printmaking & Illustration, representing some of the best known names in the business including Jon Burgerman, Jane Ormes, Tom Frost, Peskimo and (of course) Graham Carter.
The Boxbird website was one of Steve's first website projects and certainly his first e-commerce effort. After 8 years and a move from their physical gallery space to 100% online, it was time for a complete overhaul. The website was looking very tired, it was not optimised for mobile devices and didn't showcase the artwork to it's full potential.
Alice had some very definite ideas about the style and functionality of the site and had clearly spent a lot of time compiling her own ideas and feedback from her artists and her customers, so we had a lot to work with. Her number one requirement was that it didn't look like every other portfolio and e-commerce site out there. It needed to be easy to use, unique and fun.
We took the Boxbird site as a good excuse to give our own e-commerce system a spring clean. The basket, checkout and customer account pages were all redesigned from scratch for the best user experience.
Alice's own mockup formed the the basis of the design style and following her requirements we introduced a comprehensive search feature, customer wishlists, artist bios, an "inspire me" feature, social media feeds and a blog.
One of our favourite features is the colour search. When a new product is added via the CMS, the main image is analysed and the 3 dominant colours are automatically picked out. On the front end, the site visitor can pick a colour from a colour spectrum to return the products with the closest colour match.
The website was launched with great success. As it stands, there are a number of features still in the pipeline which will be developed and implemented in due course, but the core ecommerce platform and website build is complete. We look forward to seeing the sales results from the new site and we are sure Graham & Alice will keep us updated with how the online shop is performing. We have thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and happy to see it successfully launched.
The Nexus team have been an absolute delight to work with. They listened to everything I wanted, suggested so much more than I had even thought of and implemented it all with incredible skill and attention to detail. I can't fault this company and am very grateful for all their hard work.
